Message from the Superintendent, Dr. Andrea Guerrero

Welcome Back!

 Dr. Andrea Guerrero, Superintendent

I am excited to be returning Waverly Community Unit School District 6, for my 21st year in K12 education.

Over the past two weeks, I have had the opportunity to go in and out of classrooms at both our sites. Our teachers are prepared and have implemented the curriculum updates and focused on procedures and routines with students during these first few weeks of school. The enthusiasm and positive energy from the staff is infectious.

We kicked off the school year in mid-August with a one-day District-wide teacher institute, followed by half-a-day site specific institute and time for classroom work. The Open House’s in both buildings went well. We were excited to offer this option to our high school students and hope to offer a High School Open House option each school year.

Our teachers engaged in small group development throughout the summer in several different core subject areas, but many chose to go the extra mile making this year’s classroom management and intervention trainings. The commitment from our teachers makes me very Waverly proud!

Being back to normal for a new school year without restrictions is a great feeling, but part of that requires us to undo some of the things created during COVID. For the last two years, the USDA has provided a free lunch program to all students throughout Waverly CUSD 6. That program ended this summer and starting tomorrow, students will be required to pay for their meals on campus unless they are enrolled in our free and reduced lunch program.

There will be no masks required for the return to school and I do not envision us returning to masks in any mandated format at all. That being said, individuals are always welcome to wear a mask in our school setting and we strongly encourage those who may have sickness at home or who are recovering to follow their doctor's instructions and accepted recovery practices.

Student absences related to COVID will be handled in a similar fashion to last year. We will continue to allow an unlimited number of excused COVID absences for those students who test positive if the parent provides a doctor's note or positive COVID test. Please check with the school nurse or building administrator for additional information.

Traffic is always trying at the start of a school year when buses and carlines return to our streets. Please pack a little patience and if you can, leave a little early. Most importantly, keep your eyes open for school crossings, crossing guards, school buses and little ones who may not be following directions. Also note, school zone traffic enforcements hours start at 6:30am.

We have so much going on in our school system. I hope you keep current with all the updates on the official school Waverly App, FB page and on our Website (wsd6.org) as to what's happening throughout our district. We also post updates regularly in the local print source the Waverly Journal. We continue to be positive as a staff and working had toward bell to bell teaching and learning as we introduce new core curriculum and streamline our assessments during the year.

As I enter my 21st year in public education, I want you to know I sincerely appreciate the support you give to our Waverly school system. We are blessed beyond words with what we can provide. On behalf of myself and my colleagues we thank you so very much for trusting us with your children and we hope you and yours have an excellent 2022-23 school year!
